Force 21 - out now in the shops

Force 21 - Out now in the shops
Issue 47 - September 30, 1999

Review
Tarzan page 2 of 2
PlayStation

This standard fare is enlivened by the occasional chase sequence starring a deranged clan of baboons and a frightened family of stampeding elephants, in which the only skills necessary for completion are, (you guessed it), left, right and jump. Bonuses are awarded for collecting all six letters that make up our hero's name, the prize being more clips from the film. Bonus levels can be accessed by collecting all four pieces of 'monkey parchment', (relatively simple areas in which you can collect extra coins and fruit for more lives).

The question also remains that in these days of 3D platformers such as Spyro 2, Croc 2, Crash 3 et al, is there still a place in console gaming for the 2D alternative that relies on a completely linear structure? Disney may have tried to combat this by going for a 2.5D alternative, but it still smacks of laziness on the developers' part.

The game's major flaw, however, lies with its unforgivable, hair-tearingly frustrating instant-death traps. There really is no way of anticipating them and you'll lose countless lives for no good reason because of it - a major gaming faux pas in anybody's language. Even worse, these instant-death areas are predictably at the end of levels, and you'll only ever discover them when you've got one life left. You may have tried unsuccessfully to emulate Tarzan's elaborate war cry before, but you'll find it comes naturally when you've lost your 30th life on the same collapsing bridge. A wasted opportunity then, to make what is a fantastic licence into what could have been a fantastic game.

FG verdict
With half-term looming over its release, a massive film and Disney stores packed with Tarzan soft toys and pencil cases, this game will sell. That doesn't mean it deserves to. 63%
