Oof! Sounds excellent. How about Career mode?
Career mode lets you create your own pugilist and work your way up the rankings. You can choose his height and weight, boxing style (slugger or boxer) and whether he fights regular or 'southpaw' (that's left-handed, for all you non-fight fans). Then you're allotted a number of points which must be divided between the various attributes (power, speed, stamina... chin?), just like in a role-playing game - which it is, in a sense. Best of all, you can make him look daft by giving him a multi-coloured afro.
Classic Fights sounds intriguing. Please elaborate...
Fans of the sport will probably benefit most from this as you can actually rewrite history by taking part in some of the greatest fights of all time. For starters, you can recreate The Thriller in Manilla, a 14-round epic between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier from 1975. Then there's the culmination of a six-fight series between Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta from 1951. This sequence of fights formed an important part of the classic film Raging Bull, where the part of LaMotta was played superbly by Robert De Niro.
Sweet! But I've already got the original Knockout Kings. Why would I want to buy this one?
Have you been listening? This version improves on the original in every way. The speed and control have been tweaked, offering better responsiveness and fluidity; the graphics are vastly improved (just look at the boxers' faces in the screenshots); and there's a great new training mode. It's almost as if Knockout Kings was a teaser, showing us just a glimpse of EA's boxing vision. Let's just hope they don't throw in the towel when they see the competition.
Loads of play modes, including the fantastic Classic Fights
Vastly improved graphics, making the boxers easily recognisable
More responsive control system which feels much better than before
Some very pleasing punches, especially the flurries and combos
Maybe we should wait for Knockout Kings 2001, which is probably due out in around three months
