Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings page 2 of 2
PC

This introduces the all-important element of strategy and adaptation. Now you can't just construct an all-conquering army of the best 'tank', simply because there's no best to choose from. Fifty champions might seem like a sound idea but show them the wrong end of a catapult and you'll just be in command of 50 corpses. Armies must be built from a mix of units in an attempt to cope with any eventuality.

As well as alterations to the way the game plays, the graphics and control system have been subjected to an overhaul. AoE2 is now one of the most attractive and comfortable RTS games to play. The level of detail has increased and everything is a lot bigger and prettier than the original. The unit pathing and AI has been improved, which should lead to fewer annoying 'man stuck behind tree' scenarios, as well as allowing for some more devious ploys by the computer. We were certainly impressed when the computer sent in some cannon fodder to draw all the defenders away, before spanking us with the main force.

As well as the usual deathmatch and multiplayer action, AoE2 features a number of campaigns following the history of important military leaders, including Joan of Arc and Genghis Khan. Since the game now takes place from the Dark Ages to the Imperial Age (as opposed to the Iron Age in the first game), the units are all suitably medieval. With 13 races to choose from and a massive number of new units, there'll be plenty to keep you occupied. The cream of the crop by some considerable margin.

FG verdict
Shows the world how an RTS should be. Better than even the mighty Tiberian Sun, AoE2 improves immensely on an already excellent game. Something you shouldn't be without. 96%
