But isn't it all just 'tank rush this, tank rush that'?
Not at all. There are deathmatch and 'capture the flag' elements to the objectives, as well as multiple objectives on some levels.
What's my motivation here?
Well, Ground Control's developers, the Swedish Massive Entertainment, haven't exactly gone overboard here. You play one of two warring factions, both of whom are looking to populate some alien worlds after the Third World War.
Yawn.
It's not the greatest of starting points but Massive are keen to point out that there's more to it than that, and in single-player mode the storyline unfolds as you play through the game, which consists of 30 missions divided between two campaigns.
Any extras?
Well, as was first pioneered in Dune 2, each side's got some unique special units that can be employed to bring maximum destruction.
Nice. Plenty of fogging and clipping problems?
Certainly not in the version we've seen. The graphics are remarkably lovely and the control interface seems terribly intuitive. Ground Control has a real 'pick up and play' feel about it which should appeal to everyone who likes RTSes but gets fed up with having to build up an attacking army at the start of each mission.
Do say...
Get the artillery hidden behind that hill on the left!
Don't say...
It's just a RTS game with the interesting resource management bits amputated
Certainly looks the business
None of that waiting for stuff to be built nonsense
Tactics play a major part - tank rushing won't usually suffice
Alien technology to discover and employ
They've taken all the resource management out
