Nuclear Strike page 2 of 2
N64

One new addition, which will come as a pleasant surprise if you haven't sampled a Strike game for a few years, is the on-screen compass which points you in the right direction to find your next target. It means you don't have to keep switching to the map screen to find out where you are, and it can be set to direct you to fuel supplies, ammo dumps or any other special items.

At it's heart, though, Nuclear Strike is a basic, old-school shoot 'em up. The lack of any N64 enhancements is somewhat galling, given the analogue controller and superior graphics hardware the developers had at their disposal. It doesn't look that much better than the original PlayStation version, despite a medium-res option if you've got an Expansion Pak installed, and the movement of the helicopter is resolutely digital - you always fly at the same speed, no matter how far you move the joystick. The explosions look underwhelming and the frame rate isn't quite what it ought to be.

Despite all that, though, and despite the fact that you can pick up the near-identical PlayStation version for less than half the price, it's a lot of fun to play. The only comparable Nintendo title is the ageing Chopper Attack, which doesn't offer anything like as much variety or longevity, and Nuclear Strike certainly has plenty of decent blasting action packed into the cart. It's about as good as Strike games can get, even if it's far from groundbreaking.

FG verdict
Solid, explosive fun. If you haven't already had enough of Strike games then this is the best one so far. 80%
