Review
Gran Turismo 2 page 2 of 2
PlayStation

With most driving games, you select your car and then plough through half a dozen courses. With GT2, though, you jump into the car that you feel best suits the individual race. It has over 600 vehicles in all, and each one, every damn car, is surprisingly unique. It's not a simple matter of aesthetics or horsepower, although these do, naturally, exert a certain influence. Nope, it's the fact that when you jump into your Celica, your driving style adapts in order to best utilise its strengths. When you begin to play around with upgrades - from sports tyres to flywheels - you invariably feel the difference that they make, and even hear it in some instances.

Ostensibly a simulation, you can dip in and out of GT2's more hardcore modes with ease, even if you're no great fan of motoring. Also, to appease the casual gamer who might regard the buying, selling and upgrading of cars to be tedious or anal, it has a separate 'arcade' disc. Most players, we feel, will have an affinity for both.

The sheer number of races and options within GT2 almost beggars belief. It's hard to relate a fraction of its depth within the confines of this review. How do we explain the elementary beauty of its rally mode? How its off-road tracks are - when compared to the likes of Colin McRae Rally or V-Rally 2 - rather bland, but the quality of the car dynamics makes it equally as engaging? Do we mention the Endurance races that take between half an hour and two hours to complete? And, in doing so, must we sacrifice a descriptive mention for... hang on, there's no more space. Bad luck, Time Trial mode.

So, yep: it's brilliant and you should buy it. And yep, it's the best racing game for the PlayStation, and, in many respects, on any format. Again, size matters - but it's what GT2 does with it that counts.

FG verdict
A fantastic sequel with more play modes and options than... ooh, probably every game released in the month of June last year combined. GT2 will appeal to casual gamers and hardcore race fans alike. An essential purchase. 95%
