Rollcage page 2 of 2
PlayStation

More importantly, the game itself is more than just a pale ‘Wipeout on wheels’ cash-in. Once you’ve gotten over the initial shock of the sheer speed of the thing, Rollcage comes into its own.

Despite the fact that your vehicle’s wheels cling to just about every surface (you can motor along upside down, should you be so inclined), the game is best played ‘straight’. That is, zooming directly along the road, garnering boosters and concentrating on what you’re doing, rather than worrying about what the other drivers are up to.

However, the power-ups are noteworthy. There are the usual shields, speed-ups and rockets. But best of all is the homing missile which targets the race leader – you sometimes see it race over your head, turn around and then bash straight into the front of your vehicle.

There’s a wealth of circuits, split into leagues in the one-player game. But it’s with two players that Rollcage really begins to shine. The head-to-head races are the fastest the PlayStation has seen yet and deft use of the pick-ups can turn a race, quite literally, on its head.

Not all the circuits are as neatly designed as they could be. One of them sees you heading toward ‘dead ends’ with the ‘Wrong Way’ message appearing far too late. This can lead to confusion, especially for the novice racer. Also, some may find the controls a little finicky, but Rollcage demands perseverance, such are its charms. Definitely worthy of investigation.

FG verdict
Rollcage has taken up the baton from Wipeout. It’s pedal-to-the-metal quick and the split-screen, two-player game is as good as any on the PlayStation. 90%
