The reflections on the glass in SR2 are top notch
The Dreamcast's first blast of racing mayhem comes courtesy of a household name in arcade land. Can Sega Rally 2 bring the flavour of the coin-op to lounge lizards everywhere?
Ant Grimley
The original Sega Rally had a habit of leaving you frustrated. The slightest touch of invisible walls ground you to a halt and the course design got worse as the game progressed. The car choice was limited and the special car, the Stratos, sounded like a flymo finding frogs in long grass.
Sega Rally 2, however, is a completely different animal. For a start there are five superb courses consisting of three stages a-piece, plus a one-stage course. Each stage can be run under a variety of weather conditions that really affect the handling and require you to change driving styles to compensate.
There are eight cars to jump into initially with plenty more coming your way later on. Seeing as you're spoilt for choice FG recommends approaching the Celicas with caution. They seem bigger than those in the original and prove too heavy to cope with many of the courses. Opt for something small and fast, and you're away.
The graphics are quite simply stunning, producing a crisp picture that draws far into the distance. That’s not to say there’s no room for improvement (all hail Gran Turismo for squeezing that little bit extra out of the PlayStation).
