So what's all this about economics? Sounds a bit boring.
Not in the slightest. As in the real world, situations can be resolved through diplomacy and trade, rather than by just flying over and dropping bombs.

Leave it!
Sorry. You can actually achieve victory by accumulating great wealth, as well as by the tried and tested domination of other civilisations. Trade food for gold at the market or create trading routes with your allies. A market-based economy gives you the option to buy, sell and share resources.

Which civilisations will I be able to guide to greatness?
There are 13 in all, including the Frankish (French), Japanese, Byzantine, Viking, Mongol and Celts. Each civilisation has unique buildings, units and technologies.

What modes of play are on offer?
All the usual single and multiplayer skirmishes will be up for grabs, as well as a few interesting new play modes. Single-player campaigns are based around the struggles of a particular historical figure like Joan of Arc, William Wallace or Genghis Khan. Be warned though - lose the key figure and your game is over. Of the multiplayer modes, 'Regicide' sounds like a lot of fun. You'll need to protect your queen or king while trying to assassinate the enemy's monarch.

Excellent. Is that it?
Did we talk about the campaign editor?

No.
Ah... well there is one. How about Internet play?

No. (sigh)
You can do that too. Up to eight players.

Good.

*Lovely graphics, the buildings are particularly impressive
*The new combat system offers more depth to the seasoned gamer
*Choose to acquire wealth in order to succeed (like Bill Gates?)
*Multiplayer skirmishes are going to be fun
*You might even learn a bit about ancient civilisations
