Redline page 2 of 2
PC

If it weren't for the spectacular over-use of coloured lighting and other 3dfx-erie, you'd swear that Redline was a couple of years old - it displays exactly the kind of ambitious genre-melding that many a developer went bankrupt attempting in pre-graphics accelerator days.

Yet despite the 'boshed-out' feeling of the game, there's a curious amount of fun to be had in pursuit of your mission objectives. Weaponry is handled with wit and aplomb - your pedestrian firearm morphing into a more powerful piece as power-ups are collected. Plus, the sheer amount of devastation and violence, coupled with some hilariously OTT sound effects, mean the atmosphere created is one of dark comedy rather than self-indulgent war-mongering.

Indeed, one of the game's main plus points is the sheer pace at which events occur. The proprietary 3D engine's a solid piece of code, and there's never a dull moment to be had while launching your armoured vehicle at the next hapless goon or car which dares to stray into your path.

Naturally, your boredom threshold will be tested in the long term, and there's very little here that hasn't been seen before, but if road rage is your virtual poison, you could do far worse than give Redline a test drive.

FG verdict
An unspectacular shooter that doesn't know whether it wants to be Carmageddon or Quake. Ultimately, it gives you mediocre versions of both. 62%
