Anna Kournikova's Smash Court Tennis page 2 of 2
PlayStation

It doesn't skimp on any facet of the game, either. The Square button serves with huge amounts of slice, travelling at a hundred miles an hour; the elegant, precise Circle button returns down the line and a chippy Triangle lobs to put your opponent on the back foot.

The desperate blocking lunge with an X against a massive serve leaves your opponent looking totally bemused. Four successive aces when you're love-forty down, the last one hitting a ball boy in the goolies for extra style points, gives the kind of satisfaction you only get when the job's a good 'un.

And what better setting for a classic game of tennis that the streets of Westminster, complete with London buses? Or if you fancy hotter climes, there's always Los Angeles, your pitch floodlit with car headlights. The choice is yours, and in lovely Technicolor.

Happily, FG can't point to any major flaws in this game - even the umpire always seems to get it right (although maybe that is a flaw). The sound is spot on (there's a bang-on ping when your ace hits a bus), and the front end is simple and quick to get through.

There are loads of players to choose from, and you can even get tennis coaching from a teddy bear. What more could you want? It looks like it's not going to be such a long summer after all. Anyone for tennis?

FG verdict
Forget the football, Kournikova Tennis deserves to be the PlayStation hit of the summer, much like Super Tennis on the SNES was back in the day. Quick and engaging to play, colourful and addictive, it should provide sterling service. 90%
