Mini-Review
|
| NBA Pro 99 |
| Game Boy Color |
From: Konami |
For some reason, be it screen size or a lack of computing muscle, there's a distinct lack of decent handheld basketball games. Konami's latest attempt to redress the balance, NBA Pro 99, is a pretty good effort, even if, ultimately, it's more Budweiser League quality than NBA. It's a full five-a-side game in which you can take on a daunting 82-game season or just stick to exhibitions and practice matches. The gameplay is fast and easy, although lacking the kind of long-term depth you'd expect on the Big Consoles, and there are some fairly nice slam-dunk animations. Fun, in a none-too-taxing sort of way.

| Asteroids |
| Game Boy Color |
From: Activision |
Of all the arcade games from the golden age of the late 1970s, few have been updated and revamped as often as Asteroids. Bosses, backgrounds, new weapons and smarter aliens - they're all here, and as with all the other versions, they don't add a great deal to the gameplay. It's still all about zooming around the screen, pinging bullets at chunks of rock as they spin past. The power-ups and weapons are all a bit superfluous and it would have been nice to see a plain old 1979 version included, but Asteroids is still Asteroids. Let's face it, you know exactly what to expect.
