Mini-Review

| Army Men |
| Game Boy Color |
From: 3DO |
The strangely popular plastic soldiers have infested just about every games machine there is, and now it's the Game Boy's turn for some miniaturised killing and maiming. This handheld edition plays rather like the PlayStation version, with a similar mission structure and the same rotate-and-move control system. However, while those controls were the only way to do a game like this in 3D, it would have been much easier to play this 2D game using standard directional controls. It's all too easy to lose lives because you can't turn around fast enough to take care of an enemy behind you. Not bad, if you can put up with the controls, but a bit of a missed opportunity.

| Dragon Warrior Monsters |

Looking for something a little different to Pokémon? Dragon Warrior Monsters has a similar kind of collecting and nurturing gameplay, but it throws in a tighter, more focused quest, as well as extras like monster breeding and a random dungeon generator. Unlike Pokémon, in which you could probably wander around forever, DWM has a definite ending once you've caught enough monsters to rescue your sister. It's beautifully done though, with lots to see and more than 200 cute beasties to fight and train. Add the breeding option, which allows you to swap abilities through generations of pedigree creatures, and there are something like 46,000 possible combinations. Great!
