Developing heavy cannon as soon as possible should be one of your main priorities. Big guns mean you can inflict major damage on the opposition

It might be the end of the world but it’s certainly not the end of gaming as we love it...
Pete Wilton

If Armageddon does come then sitting in a tank when it kicks off would be a smart move. Better still surround yourself with a whole tank task force, ready to take on marauding bands of survivalists and army factions with machine guns, howitzers and cannons.

This is exactly what Warzone 2100 has in mind, letting you control a host of units in action, Command & Conquer-style and develop bigger and nastier betracked weapons platforms.

Starting with a small base surrounded by enemy forces you must gradually expand by hunting down artefacts and power sources. Artefacts are technologies that have survived the nuclear war and been captured by scavengers. Build up your base and forces sufficiently and driving into a local scavenger camp, levelling the defences and nicking any artefacts they have stashed there will be a breeze.

Artefacts enable you to research different components that you can then incorporate into new designs of vehicle (making for a possible 2000 combinations of body/propulsion and armament). Fail to secure enough power sources, however, and you won’t have the spare juice to develop new ever-more powerful tanks and attack craft.

Initially, you only have access to wheeled vehicles so many of the ridges and hillocks remain no-go areas as you’re channelled down roads and valleys. Soon though, Warzone’s 3D world unfolds pleasingly before you, and you see the advantages of capturing the higher ground - sensor towers and howitzer tanks stationed there can detect and eliminate intruders before they become a danger.
