Need For Speed: Road Challenge page 2 of 2
PlayStation

Won't Driver make all other car chase games irrelevant?
You could be right. Driver (from the makers of Destruction Derby) is a full-on, free-roaming affair through American cities. But you can't play it with two. At least in Road Challenge, two can race, one as the cop, one as the transgressor.

What else, then?
Well, it's certainly fast, even when the screen's split, but it does have a 'first generation' feel about it. That's to say, it could have been released three years ago. Compare Road Challenge's visuals to, say, Gran Turismo or the forthcoming Ridge Racer Type 4 and it looks rather disappointing. Goalposts have moved. Benchmarks have changed. Enjoyable as it is to thrash around, you get the feeling that the Need For Speed series is becoming somewhat redundant.

So you're saying that it's not a contender?
At this stage, it doesn't look like it. Certainly, the more discerning PlayStation race fan will find little to whet the appetite. Perhaps the younger gamer and a friend will enjoy the car chases. Those who've imbibed heavily and have returned from a local hostelry may find some mileage in the title too. A post-pub thrash, if you will.

*Neat car chase option. Exciting, albeit briefly
*A wealth of top-notch flashy sports cars
*Certainly fun in two-player, split-screen mode
*Not a great deal different from Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit
*Looks very dated compared to Gran Turismo
