If you need a cheap runaround, this'll get you from A to B. If you're looking for life in the fast lane then Sports Car GT might not be your style...
Jon Palmer
While novice drivers will find Sports Car GT pleasingly accessible, seasoned racers won't get much out of it. The front end is simple and easy to use but the game itself doesn't look or feel great.
Gran Turismo has obviously been a huge influence but many of its finer features are still absent from this offering. When you first load up Sports Car GT, you can choose Arcade or Season mode. If you choose Season, you can buy a car and then time trial it. In Arcade, there are nine cars, six of which offer a full spec and a choice of two colours. In both modes, there are six courses, including one night race, with realistic lighting.
With the other three special cars, you take what you get. You can race against any of four classes of opponents, from GT Qualifying Class through three levels of GT Class, over any distance from a single lap to 30 circuits.
A season is raced over four tracks. There are four cars to choose from, each in a choice of two colours. But at the start of the game, you can only afford two of them - the heavier Saleen S281 or the nippier BMW M3. Once you've chosen, you'll see that you can make up to four levels of modification to each of seven areas of the car. These allow for fine-tuning but you can only modify your car according to your racing class and, of course, the amount of money you've got.
