A Site For Sore Eyes
|
| The Global Petition Campaign |
Andy Ashwin stumbled across this site while researching a news piece on cyber cafes in Shanghai. We've run the story in the news section of this week's Future Gamer but felt it warranted a bit of Site for Sore Eyes notoriety too. The site commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, in which hundreds of young Chinese people died and thousands were injured at the hands of state brutality. It gives you the chance to sign a petition that will be given to the Chinese government. All you have to do is give your name and email contact – it'll only take a minute to do. These are the demands the petition makes:
1) re-evaluate the official verdict on the June 4th, 1989 Tiananmen pro-democracy protests and bring to justice those responsible for the human rights violations committed;
2) release all prisoners of conscience including those still in prison for their 1989 pro-democracy activities and review the cases of all political prisoners;
3) put an immediate end to harassment, detention and imprisonment of Chinese citizens exercising their legitimate rights to freedom of expression, freedom of association and freedom of religion;
4) demonstrate a willingness to respect the rights of all Chinese citizens by proceeding quickly to ratification and implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).
The Global Petition Campaign guarantees the confidentiality of the information entered and is initiated by the June 4th Tenth Anniversary Committee and the Tiananmen Generation Association.
The campaign has been endorsed by many organisations across Europe, America and the Asia, among them Amnesty International and the International Peace Bureau in Geneva. Go check out The Global Petition Campaign for yourself and sign up!
