What the papers say...

Hot news, readers. Sega have whittled down the shortlist of potential distributors for their forthcoming Dreamcast console. According to CTW, the battle is between Take 2-owned Jack of All Games and Gem. Anyway…

Eidos and Infogrames are doing it. And now EA fancy a bash. Yes, the 'try before you buy' PlayStation rental market is burgeoning according to CTW. Infogrames are releasing Bugs Bunny and V-Rally 2 while Eidos are planning to release Soul Reaver and FA Manager in separate packaging for the rental market. Paul Hyslop, UK sales manager at Eidos told CTW: "It's incremental business for us (sounds messy! FG). We've always supported the Blockbuster rental scheme although the rental market is not as big over here as it is in the US because it's so magazine-lead (in the UK). People tend to read the reviews rather than trying before they buy. We will wait and see how this pans out. Making this move now gives us plenty of time to evolve it".

The producer of videogames show Cybernet (have you seen it?) wants to give the programme a higher profile, apparently. Steve Keen told CTW: "We want to let people know we’re out there and get more people in the industry to watch the show. After all, TV is the best medium for this type of product. With the incredible graphics in most of today’s games, TV is the industry’s ultimate showcase". It’s about time there was a decent videogames TV show, isn't it?

The lead news story in MCV concerns a group of independent retailers who've formed a collective called G30. Why? So they can buy videogames at the competitive rates that multiple stores do and then distribute them accordingly. Basically, what this means to you is that indie retailers will be able to offer competitive prices on the biggest games. Driver is expected to be the first G30 game.

More TV news regarding games, this time courtesy of MCV. A series called Gamers has been given a 13-week Saturday lunchtime slot by ITV. The first show will be on June 13 at 12.30pm.
