It all sounds a bit 'cute'.
The game is a colourful, cartoon romp which combines puzzle-solving with swashbuckling action. And yes, it's for 'kids' but Kingsley is surprisingly addictive fare once you've gotten used to...
Gotten used to what? C'mon...
... the finickety controls. Damned annoying. The heroic young fox gets himself caught up in all manner of tricky situations (Indiana Jones-eque rolling boulders, snapping crabs, Dark Knights, poisonous spiders, and much, much more) but it often feels like he's got the turning circle of a Winnebago. You have to manoeuvre the blighter toward the direction you want him move rather than just 'have it on your toes'. This can be most frustrating in tight spots, as you'd imagine.
Dash it all...
But there are some really neat touches, too. Kingsley begins his quest inside the vegetable fortress and you get to run around and explore and gradually pick up skills before you head off to do the real work. For instance, there's a bit where you meet one of the palace guards and he tells you where to find a crossbow and how to fire it. It basically gives you the chance to become accustomed to the fox's foibles (damned controls), but at least you know how to use weapons when you eventually happen by them.
Is it a 'kids' game, then?
The publishers appear to be billing Kingsley thus. Indeed, it features all the kiddie elements you'd expect, including a huge cast of cartoon characters to interact with, 'solvable' puzzles and a cute fox. But it's surprisingly immersive despite the ropey controls.
* Huge, colourful cartoon environments
* A character you can empathise with
* Good pace, neat learning curve
* Difficult to control the blighter
* It's all been seen before
