F1 World Grand Prix 2 page 2 of 2
N64

Like the original, you can switch last season's events on or off to see how you would perform in a given set of circumstances. All the stats and figures are accurate, so you too can be David Coulthard, hero of the Brits and scourge of a certain German who shall remain nameless, but whose legs ache right now. You get all the practice and qualifying laps before tackling a full-on Grand Prix, which can last between four and 60 laps. To really succeed, you have to qualify high on the starting grid.

For a game as realistic as this, it's surprisingly easy to get into, even for a novice racer. The steering is very sensitive and the car jerks about a bit on screen, but don't be put off - a few practice laps will soon have you throwing your car around corners at ridiculous speeds with the best of 'em. Fans of way-too-accurate-for-their-own-good PC racing games may frown on the arcadey approach that Nintendo have taken with F1WGP2, but they're missing the whole point. This is fun.

It's easily accessible and a good blast to play, especially in the two-player mode. Although it doesn't offer any revolutionary enhancements, it's a viable upgrade and an improvement on the original. It's simply the best racing game on the N64, a real supermodel of a looker that recreates the thrills and spills of dramatic Formula One races in your own living room.

FG verdict
Looks stunningly realistic but still manages to retain the fun gameplay elements. Very slick and fast, especially in the two-player mode. 92%
