Tokyo Highway Challenge page 2 of 2
Dreamcast

It's nothing like Gran Turismo is it?
No it's not. It's a completely different fish. Races always take place at night on the Tokyo highway, and there are no start or finish lines. As for laps, you're having a laugh! The game's developers Genki have really stuck their neck out in order to bring something new to an already overcrowded genre.

Which is?
Every race has a rolling start, like in Daytona USA. Your car trundles round the track on autopilot until the countdown reaches zero, at which point you take over. Your opponent starts just behind you and your goal is to get away from him as quickly as possible. Whenever you are in front, your opponent's energy bar is slowly depleted, and vice versa, so the first to run out of energy is the loser.

That's crazy, mad and daft that is! But I like it.
So do we. It's actually quite addictive, thanks mainly to the aggressive opponent AI. Talking of which, there are over 120 different drivers in the game, divided into a number of rival gangs. Come to think of it, it's a bit like that scene towards the end of Grease, only set in modern times... and in Tokyo.

Hmm... very similar! What play modes are available?
There's an arcade mode, handy for when you want a quick adrenaline buzz. The quest mode is where you get to challenge a number of drivers, spending your spoils on new cars and upgrades (hence the Gran Turismo comparison).

You'll also find a time attack mode where it's just you against the clock. Best of all is the two-player mode, especially if your mate is crap at games - the race will be over in under a minute, leaving the loser feeling well and truly defeated.

  • Beautiful to look at, as you'd expect on the Dreamcast
  • Nice selection of cars, including the mighty Nissan Skyline
  • Original style of play makes for a refreshing change
  • Races are sometimes a bit too short... if you're good
  • Only one measly track!
