Tokyo Highway Challenge
Dreamcast Release: TBA From: Crave Entertainment

Here's a game we didn't expect to see outside Japan - Crave Entertainment are bringing the arcade racer Tokyo Highway Battle to the West. Only they've changed the name to Tokyo Highway Challenge.
Andy Ashwin

Why?
Who knows? Maybe they thought that the word 'battle' would imply that the cars are kitted out with hi-tech weaponry, which they're not. The racing does take place on the highways of Tokyo however, and you'll be challenging other drivers

Hmm... enough about the name change. What does the game offer?
There's a nice selection of recognisable road cars, although they've all got made up names (something to do with licensing). The graphics are up to the standard we've come to expect from the Dreamcast, with fancy lighting and believable scenery, and the frame rates are satisfyingly high.

Nice. Is it like Gran Turismo?
Umm... no. You do get to buy different cars and upgrade them to your heart's desire, and the replays look really nice, but there's only one track.

What???
Read it and weep. It is a real shame as the game has a lot of potential in all other areas - the cars look great and handle realistically (like in Gran Turismo) and you get a great sensation of speed. Then again, when Ridge Racer came out on the PlayStation, nobody moaned about the lack of tracks. Well okay, we did whinge, but only after we had picked our jaws up off the floor.
