You have to blast your way through hordes of bugs before you can find the rest of your team. Once located, they become playable characters with a completely different set of levels, and later on you can replay sections with each character, using their special abilities to open up further levels and find the items you need to reach the final boss. It's a huge game with plenty to explore, but the focus is on killing. Lots and lots of killing.
The most common enemies are the ants, which you can shoot to pieces using one of 13 types of weapon. A typical battle might involve a swarm of bugs, hundreds of rounds of ammo and gallons of green slime. Bits of ants fly all over the place and the gunfire and explosions provide an incredible light show to accompany the action, but thanks to an outstanding dual control system, you'll always be in complete control. It really does work a treat, putting you right in the thick of it while allowing you to manoeuvre as you would in a platform game.
JFG looks like nothing you've ever seen on the N64. Rare have managed to push the machine to new feats of graphical prowess, with some impressive lighting, shadows and reflections. The landscapes stretch for miles without fogging or pop-up, and as highly intelligent enemies hide behind boxes, throwing grenades at you, waves of droids pass overhead in Galaxian-style formations and there's never any slowdown. It's the most impressive-looking game on the N64.
With several multiplayer games and more bonuses and secrets than you're ever likely to uncover, JFG should last a long, long time. Whether we'll still be playing it in two years' time depends on how quickly Rare can bring us a sequel. Buy it!

| It's big, it's clever, it's arguably the most enjoyable game of the year. Pure, adrenaline-pumped action from start to finish. |
