Dear Future Gamer
I agree with Jinn's letter (Feedback, 'Stale Dreamcast', FG48) concerning that lack of vital magic in many games today. I remember when things were really good during the SNES/MD years. Cool stuff like Actraiser, Cybernator and Axelay you just don't seem to see on consoles any more. I fear that in the wake of the 3D gaming era, some software companies have lost their way now that games have more polygons and textures. Yes, we want our games to look, sound and play well, and I'm sure the Dreamcast will do well in all areas. But some of its games will not be anything new, and software companies should never let that happen. Come on you lot. You know that you can do better and be more inspired if you try. We hate stale game ideas, so don't produce them. The question that we should all be asking is if 3D is going to bear fruit to any new game genres. PS has been out for a few years now and is a machine capable of 3D for a cheap price, but how many new and really cool genres can you name off hand? Not a lot. Cool mag by the way.

Trouble is, many of the most innovative games take a heck of a long time to make. Super Mario 64 actually held up the release of the N64, but it was worth the wait. Not many game designers are afforded this luxury. S'all about money, innit...
