Great Videogames Through The Ages
Commando (Spectrum)

We're going back to early 1986 for this Spectrum conversion of a hugely successful arcade game, written by Elite, conversion specialists at the time.

Armed with a machine gun and a few grenades, our commando hero merely attempted to survive as long as possible against a downwards-scrolling onslaught of Nazi stormtroopers. Sound's simple enough, doesn't it? And it was. But it was the game's simplicity and excellent gameplay pacing that won it the hearts and minds of the nation's shoot 'em up fans, not least because you could learn your way through the game, one of the early examples of this. After a couple of goes you'd be able to get past the first tough baddie and were into new territory where you could survive on your wits until you came across the next surprise, which inevitably killed you. Then, when you re-started, you simply remembered where the surprise was and approached in a different manner. Classic stuff and surely a contender for a 3D update.
