Music 2000 page 2 of 2
PlayStation

Codemasters have also made it possible to sample snatches of music from your own CDs, though the legal implications of this could be felt if you tried to release a track commercially. These can also be edited and treated with some rather nifty effects, including reverb, flange, chorus and reverse. However, creating your own samples does throw up a problem inherent to the PlayStation platform: the lack of storage space other than a memory card.

Once you've created a song, you can use the Video options to either arrange a series of the included images or create your own. Unfortunately, this facility isn't a highlight of Music 2000; far more enjoyable is the Music Jam window, where up to four budding DJs can assign samples to their joypad buttons and trigger them together. If you think you're onto something good, these on-the-fly performances can be saved for later.

It's a measure of just how good Music 2000 is that even just a couple of years ago, software with features such as those included here would have been unthinkable on the PlayStation. Creating tracks of the quality it's possibly to make with Music 2000 used to mean spending loads of money on high-spec gear. Not any more.

FG verdict
Avoid the temptation to stick with just the bundled samples and you'll find that Music 2000 is engrossing, rewarding and almost unbelievably powerful. 92%
