Various sub games are also used during the game. Ranging from water-skiing to a rodeo ride, they provide an interesting link between levels. As with most platform games, saving is only possible at the very end of an area. Fortunately, the potential for stress-related gamepad beatings has been reduced by the inclusion of regeneration points that can be activated as you progress, meaning you don't need to return to the very start of the level when you die.
The original Rayman was a traditional, sideways 2D affair. Fans of the original will notice that, in line with the likes of Mario 64, Rayman 2 has taken on an extra dimension. Naturally, the graphics, boosted by the necessity to own a 3D graphics card, are of stunning quality. The 3D aspect also introduces the cunning use of camera angles. As well as being used to direct the play and point you in the right direction, they can also be fully controlled to get a good look at the surroundings before executing a potentially fatal jump. Controlling the game using the keyboard can be tricky, but plug in a joypad and you're away.
The traditional variety of cute characters and noises that you either love or hate are ever present. They may not appeal to the Quake fanatics among you, but they're endearing nonetheless.
Rayman 2 doesn't do anything amazing or new, but what it does it does in style. The 3D graphics are superb and the environment is extremely detailed and varied. Considering its competition, or rather the lack of it, Rayman 2 presents the perfect response to all your console loving chums.

| A platform game that, despite the somewhat stereotypical action, does no wrong. Lovely to look at and slick to play. If you like platformers, get it. If you don't, don't. Simple. |
