Infogrames follow up their recent Le Mans-licensed PC and PlayStation driving game with another title that has it's own weighty license to attract the games-playing public...
Andy Smith
Are you, perchance, referring to the Volkswagen Beetle then?
The very same.
But EA have that licence, don't they? They did Beetle Adventure Racing!
Ah, but licences don't have to be exclusive now, do they? How many football games can you name that manage to use the names, grounds and players from the Premiership?
Fair enough. What's it all about then?
It's about racing around in various flavours of the surfer's favourite mode of transport.
Oh cool. So I've got different types of VW to play around with then?
Certainly have. You've got your bog-standard Herbie for your straight speed races, for example, and your camper van jacked-up with monster truck wheels for, well, your monster racing.
Eh?
The game's got five distinct types of race for you to play around in. In Jump you have to propel your chosen car at high speed towards a ramp and see how far you can, well, jump. Monster sees you racing the aforementioned camper vans with monster truck wheels around a dirt stadium, Buggy sees you racing around a sandy beach type course, Speed sees you racing a 'proper' VW Bug around a tarmac racing track and Cross is a kind of 'motocross but in a car'-type event.
Sounds alright, but a bit limited...
That's just the single race option we've described above. There's a championship to take part in, as well as Future Gamer's favourite, the Beetle Challenge. In this mode you're working your way up from rookie, through several categories, and earning yourself points by either winning the races at that level or jumping far enough.
