Mini-Review
Xena: Warrior Princess
PlayStation From: Electronic Arts

The lithe, leather clad and large-breasted one has at last made her high-kicking PlayStation debut. A 3D adventure more like Akuji The Heartless than Tomb Raider, its quest has plenty of no-brainer hit-one button-madly type combat against a host of bad-guys (who virtually form an orderly queue to fight you), and there are a few simple puzzles to solve along the way. It's fun while it lasts, which isn't long, and there are loads of weapons to use, including Xena's trademark discus-thing, which you can steer. The combat isn't good enough for it to work as a stand-alone beat 'em up, even with its tournament mode, but as a whole the game is a lot more fun that watching the telly programme, if that's saying much. A laugh, but not outstanding.

Mini-Review
Thrasher: Skate and Destroy
PlayStation From: Rockstar

Even the unremarkable graphics fail to detract from Thrasher: Skate and Destroy, a great little game that has lots of nice little touches. With 16 different street environments to roll around, boards that can break, cops that chase you like the bees do in 720, a 'horse'-style stunt competition and a wreck competition too, it's difficult to see what more you could demand of a skater. The learning curve is incredibly steep, mind, but this adds to the satisfaction of learning how to handle your board (and the boards do handle well) and how to pull off incredible stunts. Add to all this good news a hip-hop soundtrack that maxes out and you've got yourself a highly addictive game. True, Thrasher's not so good-looking as Tony Hawks and its interface is poor, but it's still a welcome addition to the genre. Get out there.
