After Turok Rage Wars comes another game that's best enjoyed with good company and a large bowl of nachos.
Martin Kitts
In the post-apocalyptic future, the few surviving women will be known as Queen Lords and the men will be so desperate to get hold of them that they'll fight to the death in giant tanks to earn the right to ask for a date. According to 3DO and Battletanx Global Assault, anyway.
Despite the plot, there's plenty to admire in Battletanx. It's a fast and slick game of destruction with some inventive vehicles and ludicrously powerful weapons. The object is to fight your way through hordes of opponents, complete a few missions and become the most desirable tank driver on the ravaged planet. If you can make it all the way to the end, the Queen Lords will be fighting among themselves for the right to ride shotgun in your 20-tonne doom machine.
Completing the solo game isn't all that difficult, given the quality and quantity of weaponry available on your quest. There are drone guns, mines that leap up in the air to rain destruction on anything unfortunate enough to pass by, hugely destructive lasers, guided missiles and a nuclear bomb that flattens skyscrapers and turns the landscape yellow with radiation. The average game passes by in a maelstrom of smoke, explosions and flying debris. It's very fast and very violent, if a little short on longevity.
By far the most interesting part of the game is the multiplayer mode. There are more options and game types than you'll know what to do with, from basic deathmatches to variations on the capture the flag theme, with unattached Queen Lords as the prize. One game gives you a base to protect and you can switch between controlling your own tank and defending your stock of spares using a powerful gun turret.
