Silver
PC Release: March '99 From: Infogrames

Silver's graphics are wonderful. Not only the backgrounds, but the animation too

Swords and sorcery, dungeons and dragons, bloodshed and battle, damsels and demons. It's a laff innit? Silver serves up another helping of role-playing malarkey...
Andy Smith

Silver? The title doesn't give much away does it?
No it doesn't. Silver's name comes from the evil emperor you're fighting against throughout the game.

Another evil tyrant eh? What's this one done?
Nicked your wife. Actually he's ordered his troops to round up all women of childbearing hips, I mean age, and ship them to his palace. We don't know why…

And, no, don't tell me, you're going to save them all?
Oh you're sharp. Of course that's the plan - you're a young, hard-headed chap called David, who, along with his wise grandfather, is determined to thwart Silver's plans and get his wife back (she's called Jennifer, which is nice).

Enough background. What's it play like?
It's realtime for a start. There's none of this 'wander around, then have a turn-based fight with a bunch of bug-eyed monsters' that you normally get in Japanese RPGs. Here, you're on your quest (and, following the traditional RPG model, that means you're on one of the dozens of sub-quests really) when you might run into a bunch of Silver's troops. Then it's time to fight…

Crumbs. How do you fight?
By using a clever combination of mouse and keyboard. Hold down control and swish your mouse around and David swishes his sword around on-screen. Keep doing this until the enemy are defeated - pick up any goodies they drop and you're back on your quest.

Sound's tricky. What happens if you've got lots of enemies to fight?
The control system does take a little while to get used to, but the aggressive moves are well thought out. You'll often find yourself resorting to the backslash to turn and attack baddies behind you. One thing we have had more problems with is getting other members of the party to get in on the act during combat.
