Dear Future Gamer
As everybody seems to be arguing over which format is the best I thought it would be nice to see which format does well in the various genres. Before I tell you my opinions, I have a PC and I have not biased my opinions towards the PC. GoldenEye is better than every first person shooter on the PC (except maybe Half-Life) and Zelda is truly a work of genius. On the PS Metal Gear Solid is just awesome. I have played games on all three formats quite a lot so I think my opinions are quite fair. And the Dreamcast is quite good, I played it and Sonic Adventure is frankly mind-blowing but I'm not counting it in. Anyway, onto the genre wars.
ACTION:
Ooooh tough one... but I think the PC and PS are slightly ahead of the N64 in this one as they offer more action games.
RPG/ADVENTURE:
This is PC territory, they were born on the PC (and were the first two genres on the PC) and will always be ruled by the PC.
STRATEGY:
Again the PC rules here.
BEAT 'EM UP:
The PS kicks ass in this area thanks to the likes of Tekken.
SPORTS:
This is evenly distributed b/w the three with most of the sport-based games being ported to all three.
RACING:
Again, quite evenly distributed.
PLATFORMERS:
Nintendo have always had a knack for this area and obviously win this genre with Mario leading the way.
FlIGHT/SPACE SIMS:
Ha, I'd like to see either one of the consoles handle an F22 flying at mach1.
Vikram Khazanchi
FG:
Thanks for that Vikram. If anyone thinks he’s completely wide of the mark, drop me a line. At least genre wars will make a nice change from platform wars and piracy. One crucial area you have forgotten though is the shoot ‘em up. Surely the PlayStation rules in this dept?
