Speculation Irritation

Dear Future Gamer,

I'm sick and tired of people speculating on which console will win the Sega Vs. Sony console war. In fact, for that matter, I'm sick of all the speculation about the PlayStation 2. Why, only the other day I had to restrain myself from leaping across the shop and disembowelling someone for asking the hapless assistant how much their PlayStation 2 games would be etc... Only the fact he was a small boy may have saved his life.

I, for one, am happy to wait until something is actually on the shelves before getting too excited. Way back in the early '90s I remember being similarly tantalised by this thing called Project Reality that Nintendo were developing. I waited and waited, eschewing the emerging grey Sony offering as I stuffed my piggy bank to bursting. My faith in Sega, post 32X, Mega CD et al was non-existent - thankfully. The N64, as it became, slipped up more times than a drunken ice-skater and finally became the total anticlimax it is today. Guess which console I now own? Clue: it isn't black.

The point I make isn't that the PS2 won't be good. I don't know. And neither does anyone out there. It is pointless to speculate, and I will have to think very carefully about whether to wait for it, or to just buy a Dreamcast as soon as it hits these shores. (Although I'll probably wait for the initial price to drop by £100 in the first four weeks, as usual). I'm interested, don't get me wrong, and I read news on the subject avidly, it's the speculation about the future consoles that is getting me cross.

Wait and see - don't wait and see - it's your call. Just stop going on about it!

FG: It does become rather wearing doesn't it? Surely we must have some other game-related topics we can talk about? Let's move on...
