Issue 38 - July 29, 1999

Back at the Ranch
Trevor Williams

Trevor started out as a software engineer way back when computers were made of wood. After a stint as Development Manager at Elite Systems in the early '90s, he joined Rage Software in 1994. He currently holds the position of Managing Director for the Birmingham Studio, as well as a season ticket for nearby Coventry City FC. He's also a rather nice bloke...

What games are tickling your fancy at the moment?
I finished Driver last weekend, so I'm spending a fair bit of time playing V-Rally 2 - that's for market research purposes though, rather than pleasure. I've also been playing a fair bit of Quake 3 Arena and UEFA Striker in the office. At home it's been Hidden and Dangerous (top game, although I liked Rainbow Six better), Championship Manager 3 (nothing better than leading Coventry City to glory) and revisiting a couple of older titles - Age of Empires (in anticipation of the sequel) and Caesar III (I couldn't get into it first time around). Playing a bit of Ape Escape too, just to keep my girlfriend happy.

What was the first computer game you ever played?
Space Invaders coin-op.

Any good?
Me or the machine? At the time it was tops.

Any particular favourites from yesteryear?
Defender and Asteroids coin-ops - the best. It was the birth of an obsession. I used to watch a couple of guys playing them in the arcade and they were really good. I watched them for weeks and then spent every 10p I could scrape together trying to beat them. I could clock both machines, but I was never as good as the other guys. Kick Off and Sensible Soccer were massive favourites too. I still play Sensi on my trusty old Amiga 500 at least once every few months.

What was the biggest videogaming letdown for you last year?
Delays on Tiberian Sun. As soon as it's released, I'll dedicate my life to completing it!

Any titles you're really looking forward to in the near future?
Tiberian Sun (PC), Ready to Rumble (DC), Shenmue (DC), Perfect Dark (N64), Offroad (PC), Metal Gear Solid (hopefully on the next gen PlayStation), ISS Pro Evolution (preferably N64) and Final Fantasy VIII (PS). They're all going to be fantastic.

When all's said and done, what's your favourite game ever?
I loved... (deep breath)... Elite, Kick Off, Sensible Soccer, Street Fighter (SNES), the whole C&C shebang (Red Alert, TA, Warcraft, Starcraft, etc), and I really liked Rainbow Six, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Zelda (all versions), etc, etc, etc. But I think my favourite game of all time has to be my beloved Defender.
