Xena: Warrior Princess
PlayStation Release: October 15 From: Electronic Arts

Channel 5's resident female nutter Xena is heading towards Lara's PlayStation territory, replete with whips, chains and a cheeky little 'breast knife'.
Steve Bradley

Xena's mad, bad and dangerous to know, right?
Not half, mate. Lara Croft might be the daughter of Lord Whatshisname, but Xena's quite literally a Warrior Princess. And you should see the kit she wears...

Which is... ?
Short, leather, bondage-esque. Ouch!

This is the official game of the show, right?
Yup. For those who don't know what the heck the series is about, Xena is a legendary mythical warrior (played in the series by Kiwi actress Lucy Lawless - which is a pretty good name, too) who travels all over the place righting wrongs, as is the superheroine's wont.

What's it like?
The most obvious reference point is Tomb Raider. It's a 3D, third person-viewed, free roaming adventure featuring a feisty female protagonist. However, the action in Xena is pretty full-on. There's little cause for stealth, particularly in the early levels where enemies hurtle towards you from all over the place. Armed with a long sword and a frisbee (actually, it's a razor-edged, discus-shaped weapon called a Chakram, fact fans), you cut them down as and when they appear. It can get rather tiresome, as you might imagine.

Not the old 'repeat-an-enemy?'
Sorry. Yes. It's a bit mechanical. The fiends hold hostages, a number of which you have to rescue before you can progress. Steal in too close, however, and they slit the necks of the poor beggars. Thankfully, Xena can pull off one or two tricks to get around this.
