Force 21 - out now in the shops
Force21 - Out now in the shops
Issue 44 - September 9, 1999

Hall of Shame
Voyeur

Back in the early '90s the CD ROM format was still in its infancy and games developers were a little unsure of how to use this new storage medium. A lot of companies thought for at least 10 minutes along these lines:

"So we can get loads more data on the disc?"
"Yup."
"What, like moving pictures and stuff?"
"Yup."
"So we could make a game, like, you know, with actors and stuff and the player can control the storyline?"
"Yup."
"Let's do it!"

And so a flood of 'games' emerged which were billed as 'interactive movies' and were going to be The Next Big Thing. One such game was Voyeur and it appeared on Philips' ill-fated, all singing, all dancing, everything-in-a-box CDi (that's Compact Disc Interactive, folks).

Players are put in the role of a voyeur peering through a camcorder at a house across the street from where a corrupt industrialist lives. He's running for President of the United States. The revelation of a secret could end a run for the Presidency and murder is in the air. Viewers are able to investigate the private affairs. 3D graphics are combined with live-action actors shot against a special effects blue screen - actors including babes in stockings and suspenders. Yup, cheap softcore porn on CD.

And it was dreadful. Anyone who bought this dire nonsense instead of a top-shelf magazine must be spanking themselves now. No, they've probably grown out of that...
