Team Fortress 2, Ready 2 Rumble, Delta Force 2 and Shigsy!
The tone was set for this year's ECTS when Future Gamer spotted Shigeru Miyamoto on the way into the show on Sunday. The diminutive designer was just standing around outside, chatting to a colleague and looking uncannily like Mario, only less Italian and a bit more Japanese. We struggled to avoid an embarrassing 'we're not worthy' moment of hero worship, and barely succeeded.
But what about the real stars of the show? Well, those Empire girls were a bit special. Ahem. As for the games, we saw a lot of very fine examples, far too many to mention here, so let's sort the wheat from the chaff by means of the number two. Here are three great games with a number two in the title:
Team Fortress 2 - we were shown that demo (the one we'd already seen at E3), but who could be bored by it? Lovely. We also had a demo from one of the Valve guys - he showed us the lip-synching in action by means of two networked PCs. Pretty nifty it was too.
Ready 2 Rumble - Midway's larger-than-life boxing title received a lot of attention. The queues to play the Dreamcast version were considerable the whole time we were there, while most people bypassed the nearby PlayStation booths. Okay, so it may lack the graphical polish, but the PlayStation version certainly played very well.
Delta Force 2 - another game eagerly-awaited in the Future Gamer office, NovaLogic's Delta Force 2 certainly didn't fail to impress. In particular, the ability to crawl through the long grass was great. We played it alongside new tank-sim Armoured Fist 3 and noticed remarkable engine similarities. A NovaLogic representative confirmed that linking the two games on NovaWorld was currently being considered. Imagine that - hundreds of tanks and soldiers fighting it out online! Nice.
