Virgin To Start New Price War?

Rebel retailer set to drop PlayStation prices. Again!

The Virgin Megastore retail chain, which recently caused a furore when it dropped all its PlayStation prices to £29.99, could be set to start a new price war, according to a report in trade paper MCV. Virgin are apparently not going to stock any games which retail at over £34.99 in the future, and they still believe that £29.99 is the right price for the majority of PlayStation games.

"We have to be totally convinced that any higher price will be a surefire top 10 hit or we won't take it," Virgin's Bart Saunt told MCV. "The hard fact is that most titles priced at £39.99 and £44.99 just aren't selling."

He added, "I stand by my previous comments that, to achieve good volume, prices have to come down. We proved in the summer that sales rise when PlayStation RRPs drop to £29.99."

He's right, too. PlayStation software sales rose dramatically, although some claimed that games such as Driver would have sold at £44.99 anyway.
