Gripe aside, Driver has the cohesive story missing from Microsoft's game, and the idea that you're part of the criminal underworld. It's also surprisingly tricky. I've played the PlayStation version for a great deal of time, but on the PC it's like a different game. The handbrake is more sensitive, the steering less so. The car bounces more and sticks to the road less. Even with a great steering wheel this is a harder game, let alone using the keys.
The FMV is intact, telling a rather clichéd story of pseudo-'70s Starsky and Hutch, but it fails to create any kind of atmosphere. Instead, you just want to get back into the action. Over-analyse what you're doing and you soon realise that there's not much to the game - race within a rather tough time limit to one destination, avoiding or outrunning the police on the way. Yet despite the similarities from one mission to the other, there's something compelling about advancing through the game. If you ever played Delta Force from beginning to end, you'll understand how a developer can make the same mission seem different, just by making your task so enjoyable.
A friend who has the PlayStation Driver was going to buy a PC just for this game. After playing it he's changed his mind. That's not to say that this is a bad game, but perhaps suggests that it's not what it could have been. More detail, a smoother ride and more responsive controls would have made this the PC's most entertaining driving game.

| Still a great game, but the PC deserves so much more. |
