The PlayStation's love affair with niche 'extreme' sports is sure to continue with this, yet another arcade approximation of a lethal outdoor pursuit. Along with snowboarding, skateboarding and all sports futuristic, sled racing is a typically adrenaline-fuelled affair. SnoCross, as it's known, even managed to leave the normally hyper Jeremy Clarkson stuck for words.
In wintry climates all over the globe, maniacs are actually risking life and limb on 250bhp motorised skis, so what better activity to make a game out of? To describe Sled Storm as frantic would be a gross understatement. Like the Cool Boarders series, it's a high-speed, rough and tumble race. Imagine McRae on ice, substitute the wheels for skis and you'll be heading in the right direction. Your sled handles similarly to a rally car too, sliding dramatically around hairpin corners and able to cope with travel over rock and grass surfaces.
The obligatory features list includes Time Trials, Championships and quick races, along with a selection of stereotypical cartoon characters, mid-air sled tricks and a four-player mode. But whereas the multiplayer mode offers competitors of like skills to have a good tussle over the powder, the AI of the console-controlled racers leaves a lot to be desired. Whether lagging far behind on the final lap after a huge crash or not, you can almost always still catch up. Naturally, you could take one of the many sly shortcuts and swerve into another player, Road Rash style, but the computerised competitors tend to fluff it anyway.
