PlayStation2 Unveiled

Official details hot from Tokyo

Sony have unveiled their next gen console at a press conference in Tokyo. Without further ado, here are the official specifications of PlayStation2:

Name: PlayStation2

RRP (Japan): 39,800 yen (around Ł200)

Release Date: March 4, 2000 in Japan; Autumn 2000 in Europe and N. America

Accessories Included: Dual Shock 2 analogue controller, 8Mb memory card, demo disc, AV multi cable, power cord

Media: PlayStation 2 CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, PlayStation CD-ROM

Supported Formats: Audio CD, DVD Video

Interfaces: controller port (2), memory card slot (2), AV multi cable output, optical digital output, USB port (2)

CPU: 128-bit 'Emotion Engine'

Clock Speed: 294.912MHz

Memory: 32Mb Direct RDRAM

Graphics Processor: 'Graphics Synthesizer'

Graphics Clock Speed: 147.456MHz

Embedded Cache: 4Mb VRAM

Not bad, eh? Quite a looker too, we reckon, if a little like a car hi-fi amplifier. We are, however, a little surprised that Sony have opted for only two controller ports - guess we'll have to wait for Multi Tap 2! And where's the modem? Suppose we'll have to buy that separately too. But who cares? Not us - we're dead excited!

X Box Confirmed
