Software downloads to begin in 2001
Sony have announced that PlayStation2 will serve as a platform for Internet-based distribution of digital content, sometime in 2001. They plan to establish a broadband network (such as digital cable) to allow users to download data-intensive entertainment content (games) onto hard disc. This will be achieved by means of a PlayStation2 expansion module, to be released in 2001, which will include a network adapter and, presumably, a hard disc drive. Let's just hope this doesn't go the way of Nintendo's beleaguered 64DD.
