The New Tetris page 2 of 2
N64

Multi-squares are 4x4 chunks made from different blocks, while mono-squares are made from four of the same kind of block. When you've made one it turns silver or gold, and by removing it line by line you soon rack up a huge bonus score. It's a completely different way of playing the game since you have to plan well ahead, by looking through the list of forthcoming blocks, to see if a square is possible.

It's rather difficult at first, at least until you learn how to use the third new feature - the swap block. If the current block won't fit anywhere, or you'd rather save it to make a Tetris or a square, you can press L to swap it with one stored in the top left corner of the screen. It's a great idea, offering beginners the chance to get rid of an awkward piece, and experts the opportunity to save up for a high score. Every line you score is saved onto the cart, and you'll eventually earn a bizarre 3D trip around one of the seven wonders of the world, complete with history lesson.

If that doesn't sound too appealing, bear in mind the fact that you'll also get a new background and a new piece of music, and the music is some of the best yet heard on the N64 - this is one game that won't have you reaching for the mute button. There's also a highly competitive multiplayer mode in which you can choose which player to pick on, plus three solo game variants, with the ability to swap data with your friends via a Controller Pak. It might be just more Tetris, but it's probably the best version since the original.
