Mini-Review
|
| Papyrus |
| Game Boy Color |
From: Ubi Soft |
As is often the case with GBC platformers, Papyrus looks reasonably nice and the animation on the main character is good, but it's all rather unimaginative. A character with a Tarzan-like range of abilities might have gone some way towards making up for the dull nature of the levels, but the kid can't match the Lord of the Jungle's nifty acrobatics. Tarzan zooms across treetops, swings from vine to vine, scampers up cliffs and throws his arms around like a monkey. The poor Papyrus boy, deprived of decent simian interaction during his formative years, just shambles around in his lazy, one-paced way. Hardly the best platformer we've seen in the last few months.

GTA on a Game Boy Color? Yes indeed. Squeezing the massive cityscapes of the PC and PlayStation versions into the relatively meagre space available on a cartridge is a tremendous achievement, but the most impressive thing of all is that the gameplay remains essentially unaltered. You still get to drive dozens of different vehicles, deliver 'packages' to 'dealers', mow down pedestrians and shoot it out with the cops after high-speed car chases. It's marred slightly by an annoying bug which can cause you to get trapped in your motor if you're not careful, although it's easily avoided once you know what to look out for. A fantastic conversion.
