| Zelda: Ocarina of Time |
Welcome to another new part of Gamer Life. Reviewing games isn't an easy business - the pressures of time, quality and, above all, accuracy are great, and all of us who've been doing this for more than a couple of weeks have, at one time or another, reviewed a game and then wished one of the aforementioned pressures hadn't got to us.
Re-View is our attempt to step back a year and re-evaluate a game from that period to either redress the balance or re-affirm our views of it. Trust us, it'll be fun...
Back in FG5, Dec 3-10, a game was reviewed that caused a bit of a stir - Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Here's what the original reviewer, Jason Brookes, thought of it:
"This is classic Zelda alright - the very essence of Nintendo gaming distilled to perfection - but it's a Zelda fused with a powerful cinematic elegance and staggering ambition. Masterpieces seem to thrive on the N64 - but this one towers above them all. True to the original games in every way and yet so far beyond them it defies belief. Along with Mario 64, this is a masterly example of how videogames should be made in 3D. Pure Miyamoto magic." He gave the game 98 per cent.
One year on, what do we think of Zelda: OoT? Actually, we still agree. Zelda is a fantastic game and has as much appeal today as it did a whole year ago. Despite not having the luxury of a year's playtesting, Jason got the score for the game spot-on and people are still arguing today whether Shigeru Miyamoto's Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the greatest videogame ever designed, and that's some testament to a game's playability and durability.
