Mini-Review

| Theme Park World |
| PC |
From: EA |
The basic premise for this game is 'take Theme Park and make it 3D'. All the usual stuff is there - build rides, research others, hire and fire staff and make money. The other major change this has over its phenomenally successful parent is your ability to have a go on the rides you build. Add a lovely go-kart track to your park and you can actually jump into the karts and have a little blast yourself. It's great fun and it's got all the elements that made TP such a success, but it's not the leap forward we were hoping for. All those who loved TP will be keen to play this and it will hold your attention for a good few hours, but the nagging thought that you've seen and played it all before is hard to escape. A good game, but a brush-up of a classic rather than a classic itself.

The 3D referred to in the title is almost incidental as you trundle your tanks and troops around the hex-based battlefield, since terrain doesn't play a huge tactical part in the game. It makes it look pretty, though. As it is, the game's a slightly better than average wargame with little to raise it above its peers. There are plenty of scenarios to play through but you never lose the playing-by-numbers feel, and moving your air units around is a lot harder to do than it should be. The addition of 3D units and the odd hill aren't a breath of fresh air and beginners especially will find the awkward interface extremely frustrating.
