Mini-Review
Ronaldo V-Football
Game Boy Color From: Infogrames

Brazilian superstar and worryingly overworked marketing tool Ronaldo lends his name to the prettiest Game Boy Color title around. The cartoon graphics are impressive throughout but the gameplay lacks the bite to propel the game into the premier league. In keeping with the visual style, it plays a knockabout sort of game in which the ball zooms and swerves all over the place. The players aren't quite quick enough to keep up though, and a little burst of extra speed wouldn't have gone amiss. It's good fun for a quick match every now and then but it won't keep you as busy as Total Soccer will.

Mini-Review
David O'Leary's Total Soccer
Game Boy Color From: Ubi Soft

Eschewing the glitz associated with licensing a name like Ronaldo, Ubi Soft have taken the no-nonsense approach and signed up plain-talking Irishman David O'Leary to promote their footy game. Not that it really needs a big name behind it, because Total Soccer is by far the best football title on the Game Boy Color. It plays like a miniature version of Sensible Soccer, which should delight retro fans, and it's stashed with European club sides, tactical options and game variations. The controls are slick and smooth and it puts up a decent challenge, either versus the computer or linked up with a friend. Very impressive.
