Re-view is our attempt to step back a year and re-evaluate a game from that period to either redress the balance or re-affirm our views of it. Trust us, it'll be fun...
One of the most anticipated games of the year came in for the Future Gamer review treatment this time last year in FG07 (Dec 17, 1998) and we were a little out of step with the rest of the reviewing community. The game in question was Metal Gear Solid and though we, like everyone else, thought it was an excellent game we weren't convinced it was good value for money. Here's what we thought at the time: "Two CDs... 10 hours to complete (of which, around four are spent watching cut-scenes). Do the sums - six hours of gameplay for 45 quid. Shocking! A flawed masterpiece that would be better suited to the big screen." We scored the game 82 per cent.
What do we think of the game one year on? Actually, the same. We still think it's a cracker of a game but don't think it was worth the money. If you can pick the game up for half its original price or less then we'd have no hesitation in recommending you go out and buy it, but still, today, think that 45 quid for 6 - 10 hours play is outrageous.
