One year ago (FG11, January 21, 1999), we ran a review of a new first-person shooter with a twist - Novalogic's Delta Force. The excellent level design and balanced gameplay gave rise to the game's reviewer Matt Pierce describing it thus:
"Whereas Spec Ops was lumbered with a clumsy control system and feeble AI, and Rainbow Six's complexity was at the expense of fun, Delta Force is that rare title - an extremely-well balanced 3D shooter that's as fun to play as it is difficult to complete. It might seem a little too gung-ho at times, and more interaction with the AIs would have been nice, but there's no denying it's an extremely well-realised game that's provided us with the first genuine surprise of the year. Highly recommended." Matt awarded the game a whopping 90 per cent.
One year on and our opinion has changed little. Delta Force is still a cracking game and a joy to play online (its use of voxel technology negates the need for hardware graphics acceleration). If you find the game going cheap somewhere, snap it up: we'd still give it a score of 90 per cent. For the many, many fans of this game, wait for the definitive Delta Force 2 review coming in Future Gamer very soon.
