At last, Gauntlet is back! It's on PlayStation and it's got new characters and new levels and it's in, er, 'glorious' 3D?
Gideon Kibblewhite
Ah, Gauntlet. That takes me back to my youth... Bunking off school; lunchtimes in the arcade; dinner money in the slot; battles with ghosts and demons; swords, potions and axes... Sigh. Those were the days.
Indeed. The original Gauntlet series was coin-op heaven, and the ruin of many a budding mind. Now we can waste a few more of the precious days remaining to us with the sequel, Gauntlet: Legends, out on PlayStation this summer.
We've been waiting such a long time for it to happen, but I take it from your introduction that the graphics aren't all they might be.
The (unfinished) preview version looked extremely ropey, to say the least. The polygon count seems very low and the effects are less than dazzling. It seems very much more like a retro effort than a modern remake, even though it is genuinely 3D.
Oh. Are we going to be disappointed then?
Don't say that just yet as Gauntlet: Legends may well turn out to be a good 'un. It certainly retains some of the feel of the original and it's got bags of new stuff on offer.
It feels like the original?
Sure, especially in the multiplayer mode. As you wander round its three worlds and seven kingdoms collecting the 13 hidden Rune Stones with your mate (the PlayStation conversion offers only two-player play, not four), you find yourself doing exactly the sort of things you got up to in the old days.
